GUIDELINES FOR DOCUMENTATION TO BE SUBMITTED

FOR ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP

The offices responsible for acquiring documentation for obtaining Italian citizenship are generally the Police Headquarters (Questura) and the Prefecture.

These offices require that the documentation attesting to the position of the person making such application be authentic and legally valid in Italy.

i.e. we're use to translate vital records certificates (birth, marriage, death, divorce), personald docs, Criminal Records, medical reports, Drivers licenses...

This usually means producing these certificates:

birth certificate
criminal record certificate

Let's see how these certificates should be presented, in order to simplify and optimise the process.

Birth certificate / Foreign birth extract
This must be ORIGINAL and LEGALISED in the issuing country.

If the issuing country is a party to the Hague Convention, an Apostille on the original is sufficient.
If the issuing country is not a party to this convention, the certificate must be legalised at the relevant Italian Consulate.
For Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Latvia, legalisation is not required.
If the certificate is issued on the multilingual model of the Vienna Convention, legalisation is not required.

Once legalised, it is necessary to arrange for its SWORN TRANSLATION IN ITALY.

Translations made abroad will not be accepted.

Certifications issued by the consulate will not be accepted.

We suggest obtaining a birth certificate or extract with full details, which includes the names of the parents (if available), in order to simplify the data acquisition process.

Citizenship by descent iure sanguinis (naturalisation)
In this case, it is necessary to produce the registry certificates (birth, death, marriage) of any ancestors who may qualify for such naturalisation:

Original Birth Certificate (or Extract of the Birth Certificate) of the emigrated Italian individual.
Negative naturalisation certificate issued by the Ministry of Justice of the issuing country. Any changes to the name or surname must be legally rectified and reflected in the certificate.
In cases where the donor has lived in other countries as well, it will also be necessary to produce the negative naturalisation certificate for each of them.
Any marriage certificates
Any death certificates

These certificates must always be ORIGINAL and LEGALISED in the issuing country.

Certifications issued by the consulate will not be accepted.

Once they have been legalised, it is necessary to arrange for their SWORN TRANSLATION IN ITALY.

Translations made abroad will not be accepted.

Foreign criminal record certificate (Judicial Record)
A criminal record certificate from the country of origin must be provided, as well as from each country in which the applicant has resided and of which they hold citizenship.
This must be ORIGINAL and LEGALISED in the issuing country.
The certificate follows the validity period of the issuing country (usually 6 months, but in some cases only 3 months).

We suggest checking that this certificate falls within the expiration terms at the time of submitting the application to the Italian authorities.

Once legalised, it is necessary to arrange for its SWORN TRANSLATION IN ITALY.
